Pune is the Indian hiring market people underrate. It doesn't have Bengaluru's headline pay or Hyderabad's pharma story, but it quietly does something neither does as well: it runs software and manufacturing at the same time, at pay bands that make finance directors happy. For a lot of the roles we work, Pune is the answer that costs less and stays longer.
Here's the read for 2026.
On the numbers in this piece
The pay bands and hiring signals below are compiled from public 2026 reporting (Taggd, PlacementIndia, pacerecruit and similar), not a proprietary AxureOne survey. They're directional — meant to set expectations, not to quote in a negotiation.
Two engines, not one
Most Indian tech cities run on a single industry. Pune runs on two. On one side is a large IT and software-services base, now deepening into analytics, cloud, and cybersecurity. On the other is genuine manufacturing muscle — automotive and, increasingly, EV — which most software cities simply don't have. Add BFSI and healthcare, and you get a market whose demand is spread across sectors rather than concentrated in one.
That breadth is why Pune's growth has been so strong; its job market reportedly expanded around 39% in 2024, outpacing both Bengaluru and Hyderabad that year. The most in-demand roles reflect the dual base: software developers, data scientists, cloud engineers, and cybersecurity specialists on the tech side; EV and product-development engineers on the manufacturing side; and data-analyst / Power BI roles bridging both.

The headline is simple: for comparable roles, Pune generally lands below Bengaluru, which is much of the point. The exception is genuinely scarce biotech and innovation-led talent, where some GCCs and pharma firms reportedly stretch to 1.5–1.8x increments to secure people — a reminder that scarcity, not geography, sets the top of the band.
For candidates: play the dual market

For employers: mind the pipeline
The short version
Pune's edge is breadth: software and manufacturing/EV in one market, at pay below Bengaluru and with lower churn. Candidates win by targeting the right engine and leaning into cross-over skills; employers win by exploiting that breadth while planning around a fresher pipeline that is quietly thinning. It's the value pick among India's big hiring cities — with eyes open on the graduate-intake risk.
