Recruitment agency in Surat

Surat's labour market is unusually concentrated and unusually exposed to trade. Two clusters — diamond cutting and polishing, and man-made-fibre textiles — absorb most of the city's workforce, and both track export orders rather than domestic demand.

It is also a migrant economy. Research from IIM Bangalore in 2020 put Surat's migrant population at roughly 41.76 lakh, about 58% of the city, with around 60% working as contract labourers or daily wagers. Much of what looks like hiring here is informal, piece-rate and seasonal.

The formal, salaried hiring a recruitment agency actually serves sits in a narrower band: the Hazira heavy-industry belt, chemicals and dyes in the GIDC estates, corporate roles inside the larger diamond and textile houses, and a small professional-services layer.

What hires here

The sectors actually doing the hiring in Surat.

Diamonds — in transition

Reuters described Surat in 2025 as where more than 80% of the world's rough diamonds are cut and polished. The cluster spent 2025 under a 50% US tariff; the February 2026 India–US interim framework restored zero duty on loose diamonds and cut jewellery to an 18% reciprocal rate. Hiring is recovering, but at replacement level rather than growth.

Lab-grown diamonds

The genuine growth story. In the year to March 2026, India exported more lab-grown carats than natural for the first time. That is a Surat-centred capability shift — reactor operation, growth-process engineering, grading and sorting — not simply more polishing benches.

Man-made-fibre textiles

India's largest MMF centre, spanning weaving, dyeing and printing and the Ring Road trading markets. Demand has been soft enough that units have elected to stay shut two days a week to manage production and labour, so read hiring signals here carefully.

Chemicals, dyes & intermediates

Clustered around Sachin GIDC and the Sachin–Palsana corridor, serving the textile processors. This is the most conventional technical hiring in the district: chemical engineers, production and QC chemists, EHS, and effluent and CETP operations.

Hazira heavy industry, energy & port

Where the large committed capex sits. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel is expanding Hazira from 9.6 to 15.6 million tonnes of liquid steel, and Adani Hazira Port has appraisal backing to expand toward 234 mt with 19 new berths — driving projects, maintenance, EHS and logistics demand.

Professional services & IT

Real but small, and genuinely undocumented — no credible public employment figure exists, so we do not quote one. SVNIT Surat, an Institute of National Importance established in 1961, is the district's principal engineering-talent source.

Where it happens

The corridors and estates that matter.

  • Hazira industrial beltSurat's heavy-industry zone on the Tapi estuary — AM/NS India steel, Reliance, L&T's A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex, ONGC, Shell LNG, NTPC, GAIL, UltraTech and Adani Hazira Port. Formal, salaried, technical hiring.
  • Sachin GIDCA large estate on the Palsana–Hazira corridor mixing textile processing, dyeing, chemicals and intermediates with engineering ancillaries — the district's main chemical-hiring catchment.
  • Pandesara GIDC (Udhna)Dense dyeing-and-printing-mill cluster in south Surat, ringed by textile warehousing. Shop-floor and process hiring rather than corporate.
  • Katargam & VarachhaThe historic diamond cutting-and-polishing neighbourhoods, and the highest density of skilled polishing labour anywhere in the world. Also where the 2025 tariff layoffs and reinstatements were concentrated.
  • DREAM City, KhajodHome to the Surat Diamond Bourse — nine towers and 4,200 offices, opened December 2023. A lagging indicator worth watching: only around 250 offices were reported operational as of February 2026.
  • Ring Road & SalabatpuraThe wholesale fabric and saree trading belt, and the seat of the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association. Trading, sales and merchandising roles rather than manufacturing.

What it pays, and what it takes

Hiring in Surat, honestly.

Pay, directionally

  • The dependable public anchor is statutory: Gujarat's minimum-wage notification effective 1 April 2026 sets roughly ₹13,325/month unskilled in Zone I and about ₹13,897/month skilled, as daily basic plus VDA across 26 days.
  • Diamond-sector pay fell sharply through the tariff period — trade reporting describes cuts of up to 50% and worker strikes seeking restoration. Reported rather than measured, and the February 2026 duty relief has only partly reversed it.
  • Much of Surat's manufacturing pay is piece-rate, not salaried. With around 60% of migrants on contract or daily-wage terms per IIM Bangalore's 2020 study, a single 'average salary' for shop-floor work is a misleading construct, so we do not publish one.
  • For formal salaried bands in Hazira heavy industry, chemicals and corporate diamond or textile roles, no verifiable public Surat benchmark exists. We would rather say that than invent a table.

Directional bands compiled from the public sources listed below — not an AxureOne survey. Treat them as a starting point, never a quote.

What actually decides a hire here

  • This is a migrant-labour economy, and that governs supply. IIM Bangalore counted migrants from 21 states and 33 Gujarat districts in 2020; availability swings with festival and harvest returns to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, and mills have hit shortages in peak wedding season when workers cannot get return tickets.
  • Hiring authority sits with promoters. The diamond and textile clusters are overwhelmingly owner-operated SMEs and mid-size houses, so cycles are short and informal, and community referral networks do much of the work an agency does elsewhere.
  • 2025–26 was a demand shock followed by partial relief, and the recovery is uneven. Expect cautious, replacement-level hiring in natural diamonds and genuine growth hiring in lab-grown.
  • The formal technical hiring is in the industrial belt, not the clusters. AM/NS India's expansion and Adani Hazira Port's berth programme are the two largest committed capex projects in the district, and they drive the engineering roles.
